Overview of the installation process

The MiurEssence Dry Sump System is custom designed specifically for the Lamborghini Miura, and requires no permanent modifications to the vehicle. Installing the system is an in-depth operation, however, requiring that the engine be removed from the vehicle.

The MiurEssence Dry Sump System utilizes the original Miura oil pump gear set, by-pass piston/spring/cap assembly, and the original water pump assembly. To ensure proper alignment of the original oil pump and scavenge pump drive gears, it is to necessary to measure the factory oil pump housing and the engine block.

To begin the process, system developer Scott Reid will ship to the customer a fixture to accurately measure the alignment of the customer's oil pump relative to the engine block. To perform the measurement, the customer's oil pump must be removed. Removal of the original oil pump is a fairly simple matter that can be accomplished with the engine still in the vehicle. It involves removing the right rear wheel, the water pump hoses, the oil filter, the oil transfer tube, lower support brace and several nuts. The fixture is then installed and adjusted to the customer's engine block. The fixture and the customer's oil pump must then be shipped to MiurEssence. The designer, Scott Reid, will measure the critical dimensions from the fixture and the oil pump, and then machine the new MiurEssence oil pump housing casting to match the customer's original oil pump gears and block.

The MiurEssence oil tank fits in front of the right rear wheel in the cavity between the frame and the body, immediately behind the right door. The fuel hose which normally passes through that area must be rerouted. This is a fairly simple process. Any after-market or air conditioning items in this area must also be relocated to make room for the oil tank.

Pump housing machining complete   Tank placement

Once the fixture and oil pump have been measured and the MiurEssence oil pump housing has been machined to specifications, the original gears can be sent back in the original pump housing or in the MiurEssence housing, depending upon whether the customer is ready to install the system at this time or not.

The MiurEssence Dry Sump System kit comes with a detailed set of installation instructions. The kit also includes photo documentation showing the condition of the customer's original oil pump assembly as it was received, and the measurement process. No modifications are made to the original pump housing or the oil pump gear set.

All original parts are returned to the customer. Because each oil pump housing is individually fitted, Scott will work with each customer to establish a schedule. With the exception of the final machining of the oil pump housing, the remainder of the kit is designed to fit all Miuras. (Scavenge oil hose routing changes will likely be required for Miura SV's due to the SV exhaust routing.) Although no permanent modifications are required to a Miura, the following parts will be removed and can be stored for future restoration to original:

  • Oil pump housing
  • Oil filter canister
  • Pump-to-Block oil transfer tube
  • Oil transfer housing on block
  • Upper and lower oil pan castings
  • Dip stick
  • Oil filler casting and cap
  • Engine breather oil separator
